Unfortunately, diabetes is also one of those diseases which is challenging to detect. There are several types of diabetes called type 1 diabetes (or insulin-dependent diabetes), type 2 diabetes (or non-insulin dependent diabetes), and gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). Each one presents different symptoms and possible complications and requires different treatments.

Type 1 diabetes presents symptoms which on the whole may appear fairly innocuous in the beginning, which is one of the reasons that the signs of diabetes are often missed. Frequent urination and excessive thirst may point toward diabetes type 1, but they may also indicate a number of innocuous conditions or situations. Ravenous appetite, extreme fatigue, irritability, and inexplicable weight loss can all indicate type 1 diabetes. As you can see, each of these may have other explanations as well. If a number of these symptoms crop up in conjunction with each other, it is well worth checking into it. If you experience any of these symptoms and diabetes runs in your family, you won’t want to delay in seeing a doctor.

Type 2 diabetes may also present with fairly innocuous symptoms. Blurred vision, tingling or numbness in the extremities, and slow-healing cuts and bruises may be signs of type 2 diabetes. Frequent infections, particularly of the skin, gum or bladder can be warning signs as well. Type 2 is extra challenging to catch since sometimes there are no symptoms at all until the disease progresses to the point where it is causing serious problems.

GDM, like the other forms of diabetes, may present with no symptoms or very few. Usually women find out that they have GDM during routine screenings while pregnant. The screenings look for abnormally high glucose levels in blood. Three to ten percent of pregnancies involve GDM. The condition usually goes away after birth, but does pose a serious health risk to mother and child.

Finally, it is worth mentioning that a fourth unrelated condition with a similar name may also present with similar symptoms. Diabetes insipidus is a condition wherein the kidneys cannot conserve water adequately, resulting in excessive volume of urine and excessive thirst. DI is not the same thing as types 1 or 2 diabetes (or GDM), and is generally more treatable. If treated, DI is not dangerous to your health and will not shorten your lifespan.

The outcome of diabetes depends on the type of diabetes, the individual, the lifestyle of the patient, and also on how early treatment begins. Find out whether members of your family have had diabetes and whether you might have any genetic susceptibility to the disease. If diabetes does run in your family it is important to be alert for any signs of the illness, and also to take great care with your lifestyle. Maintaining a healthy diet and weight and exercising regularly will reduce your chances of developing diabetes. If you do develop the disease, these steps may mean the difference between a fairly normal life and one which is untenable.

If you struggle with your cholesterol levels, have type-2 diabetes, or experience “sugar crashes,” you probably are at least a little familiar with the glycemic index. People who have certain health problems are advised to be extra careful when they eat to avoid foods with a high glycemic index (GI). What exactly is the glycemic index, though, and what does it indicate about certain foods?

When we eat carbohydrates, energy is delivered to our cells via our blood stream in the form of blood sugar (glucose). Foods metabolize different though, and some foods raise blood sugar more rapidly and to higher levels than others. In the past we were told to eat complex carbohydrates and avoid simple carbohydrates, but this is an oversimplification. As it turns out, some simple carbohydrates are easier on our bodies than some complex carbs. Foods which spike our blood sugar are said to have a high glycemic index. Foods which do not raise our blood sugar as high or as quickly are said to have a low glycemic index.

The glycemic index is an actual numerical scale which has been developed to try and objectively compare foods. If you don’t have access to a table while you’re shopping, you can estimate the GI of some foods. Highly processed and refined white breads and flours usually have higher GI values than brown flours and breads for example. High fiber foods also tend to have lower GI values since they take longer to digest. High protein, low fiber foods tend to have low GI values, and foods which are high in protein and fiber tend to be even better (legumes nuts, fish, seeds, and lean meats are good examples).

If you are looking at a table of GI values for foods, anything above 60 is considered to have a high GI. Examples include rice, white flour bread, whole wheat bread, rolled oats, watermelon, mashed potatoes, baked potatoes, and sucrose. Foods with particularly low GI values include most vegetables (spinach, lettuce, okra, artichokes, cucumbers, broccoli, radishes and so forth), grapefruit, apples, prunes, apricots, soybeans, lentils, beans, yams, milk, and yogurt. Dried fruit tends to have a lower GI than fresh fruit.

Obviously you can’t just stop eating foods that have a high GI—or you’d be cutting tons of essential nutrition out of your diet. This being the case, you’re going to want to eat complex meals. That means eating meals which include a lot of different types of food in them that can balance each other out. A good example would be fried rice (made in a healthy oil of course). The rice has a high GI, but it’s a good source of carbohydrates. If you add in broccoli, peas, carrots, and so on, then you have a lot of foods with a low GI to balance the high GI of the rice. If you have a breakfast of rolled oats, you could add some nuts and dried fruits to balance out the high GI of the oats. Balance and moderation are always key!

What is known is that genetics plays a major factor in who gets the disease and who does not. Genetics may make some people more susceptible than others, but lifestyle and external factors may also play a deciding role. There are several types of diabetes, type 1 diabetes (or insulin-dependent diabetes), type 2 diabetes (or non-insulin dependent diabetes), and gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). Each of them has distinct causes.

In type 1 diabetes, the body has an autoimmune disorder which causes the system to attack and destroy the insulin-producing cells of the pancreas. The reason for this disorder is not yet clear to scientists, but it is believed that it can be triggered by factors like diet, chemicals, or even a virus (perhaps a specific one). Genetics is believed to play a major role in the disease. While it is impossible to prevent the onset of the disease if a virus is involved, taking extra care with diet and lifestyle may help to prevent type 1 diabetes. Lifestyle will be a key issue if you do develop the disease, and symptom management will be much more successful if you observe a healthy diet and pattern of exercise.

The most common form of diabetes, type 2, also has unknown causes. It is believed that genetics plays a strong role but that lifestyle does as well. With type 2 diabetes, the body’s production of insulin is insufficient or its use of insulin is inefficient. Poor diet, obesity, and inactivity all have been linked to the development and progression of type 2 diabetes. You may be able to prevent the disease by maintaining a healthy lifestyle, though there is no surefire way of preventing the disease yet since it is so poorly understood. Once again, lifestyle is a key management technique.

The third type of diabetes is gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), a disease which occurs in pregnant women and is usually temporary in nature. The cause of GDM is also unknown, and since it is so common and usually temporary, it may not actually be an abnormality per se. Patients who take care with lifestyle during pregnancy will usually find that the diabetes subsides after delivery, though it is not a guarantee, and the child may grow up with a predisposition to diabetes. While there is no known way to prevent a first occurrence of GDM, it is possible to significantly reduce the possibility of a recurrence by waiting for at least a year before becoming pregnant again. Within certain ethnic groups, the risks of developing GDM a second time are higher, so it is best to be apprised of the particular risks which may affect you before you attempt to become pregnant again.

Even though the causes of diabetes are currently poorly understood, one thing which is important to understand is that you can have an impact on whether or not you develop diabetes, and also on what happens if you do. While there is currently no cure for diabetes, most patients who maintain healthy lifestyles have far better life experiences than those who choose unhealthy diets and do not stay active.

With that in mind, you’ll have more luck getting your kids to eat healthy if you eat healthy as well. If you don’t set a good example, you’ll give them an excuse to seek out unhealthy foods. With that in mind, work with your kids to figure out what foods they like best. It’s usually a bad idea to ban all the “bad” snacks, since this means your kids will just find ways to eat them out of your sight. By allowing your kids a treat now and again, you’ll make it more likely they’ll cooperate with the healthy snacks which are good for their hearts. Here are some ideas for snacks that kids will like which are good for them.

• Popcorn! Yes, popcorn is back on the healthy foods list. It isn’t popcorn that’s bad for you, just lots of salt and butter. A little salt and butter is okay, though, and olive oil is a good alternative to butter. Popcorn actually reduces harmful LDL cholesterol, and may prevent heart disease and cancer. Your kids will recognize popcorn instantly as a snack food, and you shouldn’t have much trouble getting most kids to eat it.

• Bagels and toast. Bagels and toast are filling snack foods which most kids should find acceptable. Cream cheese, jelly, and peanut butter are all relatively healthy toppings. Avoid peanut butter with sugar added. Peanut butter is full of protein which is excellent for all muscles, including the heart.

• Another great snack involving peanut butter is an apple with peanut butter. The taste of this snack is similar to a caramel apple, which makes it a sweet treat—without the sugary unhealthiness. Peanut butter is good for you, and an apple is good for you, and combined they are even better.

• Rice cakes offer another tasty treat which is heart healthy and full of healthy carbs. If rice cakes are too plain, they can be eaten with peanut butter or melted cheese. Cheese is high in cholesterol and should be enjoyed in moderation, but it has tons of protein and calcium and thus provides many other essential health benefits, especially for a growing child.

• Tortilla chips with salsa. The chips may not be great for your kids, but fresh salsa certainly is. This is a good way to get your kids to eat more vegetables!

• Another clever snack is miniature pizzas made with tomato sauce and cheese on toasted wholegrain bread or English muffins. You can also add peppers, tomatoes, or other vegetables to the top for additional nutrition. Most kids won’t turn down pizza!

• Frozen blueberries or pineapples. Both of these frozen fruits are easy to eat and can satisfy your child’s sweet tooth. Blueberries in particular are good for your heart and contain potassium, fiber, magnesium, and calcium. Pineapple has a ton of vitamin C in it. Frozen raspberries are another good option. Just make sure to select fruit which isn’t too hard to bite.

It may be tough to get your kids to eat healthily, but it’s important to avoid childhood obesity and to promote good cardiovascular health at a young age. You may have an easier time getting your kid to eat popcorn, chips and salsa, rice cakes and toast than you would getting your kid to eat carrot and celery sticks. Don’t forget to let your kid at least try eating other healthy snacks too. You may be surprised what your child enjoys!

While you can purchase Medifast’s products online, it can be beneficial to go and visit one of Medifast’s Weight Control Centers across the country. Medifast doesn’t have centers in every state, but if you live in California, Arizona, Texas, Florida, Delaware, Louisiana, Maryland, Minnesota, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Wisconsin, or Alabama, there may be a Medifast center near you. Medifast’s programs were developed by experienced medical doctors and have been recommended to patients by more than 20,000 doctors since 1980.

When you visit a Medifast center, weight loss professionals will offer you an assessment of not only your body mass index (BMI), but also your body composition by using Biospace’s InBody® technology. This technology will help you to learn more about your body composition—what percentage of your weight is fat, how developed the muscles in your arms, legs and torso are, and also what your water weight is. It’s important to find out your body composition to know for example if you are really overweight (nothing is wrong with muscle mass). You’ll also be able to come back later and make sure that the weight you’re losing is fat, not muscle. The goal with weight loss is always to burn fat—not to let your muscles atrophy. Indeed, it’s best if you can work out and build healthy muscles while you’re burning fat.

Medifast sells a number of food products for dieting including meal replacement shakes, nutritional bars, brownies, pudding, oatmeal, snacks, sugar free syrup, drinks, soups, pancakes, and more. There are also Medifast Meals to serve as your main courses, and healthy dietary supplements to provide you with extra nutrition while you are dieting. The idea is always to get the right amount of vitamins and minerals, even though you’re trying to cut back on your calorie intake. The dietary supplements include Essential 1: Sleep Health, Essential 1: Digestive Health, and Essential 1: Heart Health. These three supplements will keep your digestive tract running smoothly, your heart beating strong, and your sleep relaxing and rejuvenating.

One of the benefits of visiting a Medifast center in person is that you can receive one-on-one counseling to help you meet your weight loss goals. When you sign up for the program you can choose to visit the center weekly and discuss your progress with a counselor who is experienced with helping people to achieve their weight loss goals in a safe and effective manner. One of the reasons that so many weight loss programs fail is that they aren’t tailored to real, unique individual men and women. Medifast doesn’t offer a one-size-fits-all solution, because every person’s body is unique, and every person’s life situation is unique, too. One-on-one counseling is Medifast’s way of recognizing how personal the weight loss process is. Counselors who understand weight loss can recognize what’s working and what isn’t for a specific person, and make recommendations to adjust the program. One-on-one support is also a great way of encouraging dieters and keeping them on track.

Medifast costs about $11.00 a day, which means that it’s pretty affordable for an individual who needs to lose weight. Variety Packages are available to help customers to save even more money on Medifast Meals, shakes and other products. Medifast states on their website that it’s possible to eat on the program for just $299.50 a month if customers take advantage of all their discounts. Medifast also offers a free weight-loss profile and consultation which can help you to decide whether Medifast might be right for you.

Different formulas are available for men and women which are tailored toward the differing nutritional needs of the sexes. There are also specialty Medifast shakes for diabetics and for patients with arthritis (Joint Health shakes). Even though Medifast shakes are meal replacement shakes, there are also appetite suppressing specialty shakes for people who still struggle with the unhealthy urge to overeat.

The six flavors of Medifast shakes include French Vanilla, Dutch Chocolate, Banana Crème, Orange Crème, Strawberry Crème, and Swiss Mocha. The French Vanilla flavor is light, neutral, simple, and accessible. This is a good flavor to stock up on, since it’s hard to get tired of it. The Dutch Chocolate should appeal to a lot of people too, especially (of course) chocolate lovers. Banana Crème has a similar flavor to banana pudding, and Orange Crème is similar to orange sherbet. The Strawberry Crème shake unfortunately has received a lot of poor reviews (it tastes a bit cloying according to most reviewers) but may still appeal if you really like the taste of artificial strawberry or just want a change. Swiss Mocha is formulated to taste similar to coffee.

A lot of people who are thinking of doing the Medifast program want to know whether the shakes taste or feel “chalky.” Most customers report that they are pleasantly surprised by the texture and flavor of the shakes, and that overall they are quite smooth and drinkable. They are also versatile. You don’t need to drink a Medifast shake as is—you can also modify it using a recipe you find online or one which you invent on your own. There are complex recipes and also simple modifications which can make Medifast shakes more enjoyable.

An example of a complex recipe would be to take the Swiss Mocha Medifast shake and mix in 8 ounces of water with a bit of stevia or another sweetener of your choice. Add in a teaspoon of instant coffee and a dash of cinnamon for a different flavor.

One simple idea to jazz up a Medifast shake is to add some low fat or no fat whipped cream and then freeze the shake. The result is a dessert-like concoction which has a slightly different flavor and texture. Another great idea is to add a sugar-free, fat-free syrup to a shake to flavor it. For example, you could add caramel or raspberry syrup to a vanilla or chocolate shake to enhance the flavor and add a little complexity. Even though there are six flavors of Medifast shake, you may get bored of them if you don’t spice them up a bit—which is where little modifications like this can come in useful. There’s no limit to the variation you can create with a little ingenuity.

You can purchase a box of Medifast shakes online for $16.50; each box contains 7 servings in a flavor of your choice. If you discover you aren’t happy with the flavor you bought, you can go online to Medifast forums and trade off flavors you don’t like to other customers for flavors you prefer. There are many people who enjoy losing weight with the Medifast program, and the Medifast community is also a great source for shake recipes.

In our diet-obsessed culture it’s easy to start thinking that snacking is bad for you—but it isn’t if you do it right. Indeed, lots of small meals evenly spaced throughout the day are usually best for metabolism, so snacking can serve a good purpose. The right snacks will provide you with energy and nutrition when you need it, and not contribute to “bad” HDL cholesterol. Healthy snacks can provide your heart with the nourishment it needs to stay strong. Here are some ideas for what to munch on the next time you feel the desire for a snack:

• Fruits and vegetables. Fruits and vegetables are convenient, easy to take with you to work or on outings, and they’re also delicious. Carrot and celery sticks are great to munch on, as are apples, radishes, and broccoli spears. All of these fruits and veggies not only are good for your heart but also provide nourishment to the rest of your body. Broccoli has a lot of iron in it which is important for healthy blood and body functions. On the vegetable note, don’t forget about popcorn. Popcorn, when not drenched in salt and butter, is actually good for you.

• Healthy whole grain bagels and breads. These make filling and heart-healthy snacks—just make sure that it’s whole grain you’re eating. A little peanut butter and jelly can add protein and vitamins to the mix, but make sure to buy unsweetened peanut butter and jelly, otherwise you’ll just be eating sugar, which is bad for your heart (and the rest of your body).

• Nuts and seeds. Nuts are high in protein, which can provide you with energy and other health benefits. Protein is necessary for cell synthesis and repair, particularly where your muscles are concerned. Your heart is a muscle, so nuts are good for your heart. Seeds are not only good for your heart, but also reduce inflammation, prevent kidney stones, and are a good source of magnesium. Many types of seeds reduce LDL cholesterol. Flaxseed is particularly good for your heart since it contains Omega-3 fatty acids. These fatty acids are the same ones found in fish oil, and they are excellent for your heart, your immune system, your brain and more.

• Feel like something sweet? Try eating fresh fruit, or frozen fruit for a little twist. Frozen blueberries are a delicious bite-size treat containing vitamin C, calcium, potassium, magnesium, fiber, and more. You might also try purchasing some unsweetened yogurt and adding fruit and stevia. This treat tastes sweet but contains no unnatural sugar. The fruit you add will be good for your heart while the yogurt improves your digestive functioning.

• Looking for something to drink? Milk isn’t a great choice since it’s full of cholesterol, but you may enjoy some delicious fruit or vegetable juice. Just be sure to check the label of any juice you buy to make sure it doesn’t say “sugar added” on it. All juice will have natural sugar from the fruit or vegetables used in making it, but juice which has even more sugar added to it is not so good. Tea is another good choice (just don’t drink too much caffeine; if in doubt, go with green tea—green tea is fantastic for your cardiovascular health and lower in caffeine than black tea), as is cocoa made with dark chocolate. Cocoa is made with milk though, so you don’t want to do this one too often. Cocoa does have healthy flavonoids though!

As you can see, there are plenty of fun and tasty options for heart healthy snacks, whether you’re in the mood for something sweet, something crunchy, or something refreshing. The foods which are good for your heart also have a host of other health benefits; not only do they reduce cholesterol, but many of them contain fiber which is good for your GI tract and other essential nutrients which bolster your immune system and other body systems.

Oh beware the 14th of February for it is a dieter’s nightmare. Sure the holiday is all about love and finding love but it has come to also be known about chocolate and decadence also. Not to turn you off by the holiday but you need to watch your back if you are on a serious diet. All to many new years resolutions have died to a simple heart shaped box of chocolates.

If you allow yourself to cheat or be tempted by something so innocent as a box of chocolates you could lose grips on your diet. Because it’s not just a box of chocolates, it’s the chocolate covered strawberries; it’s the cakes and creams. Worst of all though it’s the giant sale on all of the unsold candy and treats the day afterwards. Oh the mountains of candy in innocent heart shape boxes for 75% off the next day. It happens every year and it officially kills just as many diets as it breaks hearts.

So how can you defend your self? The best thing to do is look the other way! Do not be tempted by all of the sweets and look for healthy alternatives to satisfy your sweet tooth. Rather than a box of waxy, oil based chocolates why not eat more fresh fruit? Spoil your self by buying the fancy prepared mixed fruit bowls from the grocery store.

Strawberries, pineapples, melons, oranges, kiwis, berries just think of the flavors and wonderful foods you could be treating yourself to instead of cheap candies. Even adding some whip cream to you fruit bowl can make a simple treat a fancy delight.

So this valentine’s day make sure to treat yourself! Allow yourself to enjoy a sweet treat but make sure you can do it within the limits of your diet. Candies and chocolates are not healthy; they are designed so you don’t just eat one. Going back to them for just one day will not be easy to stop the next. Just like quitting cigarettes dieting takes focus and a will to not go back to old habits. This valentine’s day make the healthy choice you will thank yourself for it later I promise.

It’s a new year and its time for a new you! This is the year that your diet will finally work, or the year you finally take your doctors advice about nutrition. Many of our visitors are here because they are looking for healthy alternatives to dieting or because their doctors recommended the Medifast program.

The great news is that Medifast will help you no matter what you want to achieve. On the program you can lower you cholesterol, reduce sodium intact, and reduce fats from your diet. All of which will lead to a more healthy and active lifestyle. It was just a few years ago my father had heart surgery, he join the millions of other American’s in what I like to call “card carrying membership” because of his stints.

It was after his surgery that both of his cardiologists recommended that he should go on the Medifast diet to lower his sodium and cholesterol and you know what? It’s been a great success! Not only has he lost weight but all of his tests are coming back in the clear. If he can do it so can you!

This year make an effort to try the Medifast diet, or try to cheat less on it (we know you are). The Medifast diet is one of the most prescribed diet programs by doctors in the US and for good reason. So if you are ready to make this year better than the last head on over to Medifast and join the other millions of Americans on the same program.

Make sure to visit our homepage for the latest medifast coupons, dieting can really add up in the end. With just a simple visit to our website each month before you order you can save up to $50.00 per order. That could be a savings of $600.00 a year if you just place one order a month. I built this site so my father could do it and now you can enjoy the savings too.

Type 2 diabetes is becoming more and more common because we are a generation that is getting unhealthier. This type of diabetes generally happens to those of that are over weight and we do tend to develop it in later life.

Eating healthy and keeping our weight at a ‘normal’ level will help us to avoid developing this condition. If we do develop it and we lose weight then often the results are reversed.

Once you are diagnosed the first thing the doctor will look at with you is your weight and your daily diet. They will recommend ways to improve your daily eating routine and foods that you should eat or avoid. We can help ourselves from getting to this stage by establishing a healthy eating plan now before we do get ill. Make sure to talk to your doctor about the Medifast plan and if he would recommend it for your situation. The Medifast diet is the most prescribed diet for persons with type two diabetes.

We all know what foods are bad for us and which are good. However having a healthy eating plan written up for a diabetic will show that none of these foods should be avoided. The main part of a healthy eating plan is to enjoy everything in moderation. They do not recommend that you cut out bad foods altogether. In fact quite the opposite is the case; if we do cut out all the foods we like then we will find any type of healthy eating plan difficult to follow for a long period of time.
In order to maintain a healthy life style (especially if you are diabetic you should:

Eat a low fat diet
Cut back on the amount of sugar you consume
Avoid salt
Eat at least 5 portions of fruit or vegetables per day
Swap to whole-grain varieties of bread, rice and pasta.

Lots of these are easy to implement without too much bother. For example just by not putting salt on your evening meal and not having sugar in hot drinks you have already cut back. It may not seem like a lot but even 3 tea spoons of sugar a day is 15 a week. It all adds up.

A handy hint to remember that whilst fruit juices are good for you they do contain a lot of fructose and so if you are diabetic you should try and have one glass a day.
If you have been diagnosed a type 2 diabetic this is not reason not to go onto enjoy a healthy balanced diet – it certainly doesn’t mean you have to live on a diet of salad!

Cheese and eggs are both great foods for diabetics as long as they are enjoyed in moderation. Fish such as salmon is also great for you and all meats are generally a good option.

You should of course also eat lots of fruit and vegetables. There are some great ways to get this into your diet. Plain, natural yoghurt can also be enjoyed by diabetics and mixing this with some fruit can make a delicious and healthy dessert.
